“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is Unsearchable.”
Yes He Is!
I hesitated to use the word Awesome because the word is so overused and misused in society today, at least in America. This is not new because complaints about its use to describe something (such as a sandwich) that does not elicit feelings of awe persisted through the early decades of the 20th century (Per Merriam-Webster dictionary).
However, when used in its proper context and definition, it is most appropriate when applying it to the only true Almighty God and His creation.
In fact, I submit that there is no word in any language, or adjective that can be used, that can even begin to adequately describe how great, marvelous, wonderful, etc., God is. There are truly no words in any human language. That is probably why we are told in 1 Corinthians 13:1, that there are tongues (languages) of humankind and of angels.
How Do We Know?
Just look up. Have you ever looked up on a pitch black moonless dark night with no artificial light around and viewed the innumerable stars in the sky? What do we see?
Evidence!
It is best described by God in the question He asked us in Isaiah 40:26, “Raise your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, The One who brings out their multitude by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing.” (NASB) (emphasis mine)
To put that in perspective, think about this during your quiet devotional time of worship with God. There are approximately 200 sextillion stars in the observable universe. How big and many is that? That’s 2 to the 10th power or followed by 23 zeros! I am not a math person, but I know that is a crazy number of stars.
And God created all of them AND He “calls them ALL by name.” Come on!
That alone is truly Awesome and nothing of human origin on earth or the ordinary things people use the word awesome for can even begin to compare with Almighty God and His creation. No wonder Psalm 145:3b in the Amplified puts it this way, “And His greatness is [so vast and profound as to be] unsearchable [incomprehensible to man]. (emphasis mine)
It really is incomprehensible to us, no matter how much we think we know.
So, during your next devotional time alone with God, stop and think about that. Meditate for a while on who this God is we serve and the fact that He loves you and I more than we can humanly comprehend.
Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.” (ESV) (emphasis mine)
What Should Be Our Appropriate Response?
WORSHIP!
I encourage you to read the short February 2026 Devotional, “A Lifestyle Of Worship.” If you have already read it, read it again because we can never get too much teaching from the Word of God. That is how we continue to grow.
2 Peter 3:18 says, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. ……..” (emphasis mine)
There is much more we can share about what the Word of God reveals to us about who He is. We will continue along this line in next month’s devotional.
