Who is God? He Exceeds Greatness

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, Does not become tired or grow weary; There is no searching His understanding.”

Who is God, and where can we begin in trying to get a very tiny portion or glimpse of who God really is? We are so very limited in our finite human minds compared to the infiniteness of Almighty God.

However, when we look at scriptures which He has given us about Himself, it should illicit a deep sense of AWE and inspiration of praise and worship for the privilege and honor He has provided to us, in communion with Him. What an amazing honor and privilege we have.

Who Are You and What Is Your Name?

In looking at the historical account in Exodus chapter three, we get an amazing peek at how God identified Himself to Moses. After God charged Moses with the task of going to Pharaoh to tell him to let the Israelites who were enslaved go, Moses knew the Israelites would ask him, what is God’s name. So, he asked God, “what shall I say to them?” (Exodus 3:13).

In God’s response to Moses, Exodus 3:14, He said, “I AM THAT I AM”, you tell them I AM has sent you. Wow! What a statement and what a description.

What Does that Mean?

Those words mean so much it is hard for our human minds to comprehend, but let’s try to understand just a little of what God said about Himself.

When we look at the Hebrew word, haw-yaw, it means “to exist.” And not just exist. He is saying that He exists, that He is present, but not just present now, but present future, an action that does not end. He has no stopping point. He is not simply saying He exist at that moment, but that He existed Before time itself existed! Double Wow!

If you or I were to ask God, what time is it, He would be like, time? What’s time? Because He is outside of time! He is saying I exist now and will continue to exist when everything we see has passed away.

But here are the aspects and nature of our God that will make our head explode if we think about it too hard. His existence has No beginning, No end, and depends on nothing or no one!!!

Revelation 22:13, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End [the Eternal One].” (AMP) (emphasis mine)

The thought that God always was, that He had no beginning rattles the human brain because everything from our experience and observation had to have a beginning.

Scientists “Discover” It

Prior to 1927, virtually all astronomers believed that science had established the Universe was static; i.e., the Universe had existed forever. They concluded that if the Universe had always existed, if it was never created then there was no need for a Creator. (Creation Remarkable Evidence of God’s Design; Grant R. Jeffrey, 2003).

However, in 1927, Dr. Albert Einstein personally confirmed what astronomer Edwin Hubble saw in his enormous telescope at Mount Wilson in California, that the distant light sources Hubble saw were indeed far distant galaxies containing untold billions of stars that were moving away from our galaxy and each other at stupendous speed.

“The heavens tell of the glory of God; And their expanse declares the work of His hands.” (Psalm 19:1 – Written around 1000 BC)

At that point, Einstein realized that the Univers must logically have had a definite beginning in the distant past and later in acknowledging that he wrote that he wanted, “to know how God created the world. I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, …… I want to know His thoughts; the rest are details.” (Albert Einstein Internet site: https://libquotes.com/albert-einstein/quotes/god)

Those are interesting words from a man that had such an intelligent mind as Einstein. He wanted to know the Almighty’s “thoughts.”

What Are God’s Thoughts?

It is impossible for us to know God’s precise thoughts in most matters because He says in Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

The obvious question then would be how high is that? We cannot comprehend how high that is but think about this.

In astronomy distances are measured in light-years, how far light travels in one year. One light-year is approximately six trillion miles. It is estimated that would take about 200,000 light-years just to cross our Milky Way galaxy! Yeah right.

God’s thoughts are not our thoughts. No doubt about it.

Here Is the Point in All of This

Even though the above is true, brace yourself for this other truth God spoke to us in Psalm 139:17-18, “How precious also are your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I could count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with you.”

Wow!

While we do not know God’s thoughts per se, His Word clearly tell us He is thinking of us all the time! What an amazing truth.

I encourage you to keep this in your heart, your spirit, which is the real you when you are in your quiet devotional time with the Lord. Just mediate on Him and block out all the noise and distractions that can get in our way at times.
