“And when He had taken bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant [ratified] in My blood.'”
The bread of communion symbolizes the body of Jesus that was broken for us. He not only died on the cross, but also bore thirty-nine stripes on His back by which we were healed (Isaiah 53:5, Matthew 8:16-17, and 1 Peter 2:24). Our main scripture refers to the Lord’s Supper; taking communion should remind us of the emotional and physical sacrifice that Jesus provided. However, in this month’s devotional I don’t only want you to remember Jesus when partaking of communion. I want you to remember Him in everything you do in life.
The New Covenant: It’s Already Done
The principle of the new covenant is that it is already done! That includes redemption, righteousness, and sanctification. The work is finished. By His stripes high blood pressure is normalized. Arteries & blockages are cleared and fibroids are dissolved. The entire fall came about because Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Now we have a new covenant because of Jesus!
Psalm 77:11-12 says, “I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.”
To meditate is to take a truth in scripture and think on it over and over until you get an understanding and apply it to your life.
Testament = Covenant
A covenant is a promise between two or more parties to perform certain actions. In fact, the word testament is another word for covenant.
When everything around us looks bad, we can always find comfort by remembering the blessings of God that we have received or looking forward to the promises in His word. Our focus needs to be on the goodness of God and not on the badness of the enemy. Remembering how God saved us from a life of uselessness and an eternity in hell should give us a proper perspective on His love. When we think of the many times God has intervened in our lives, we are reminded of His faithfulness.
God’s Miracles and Provisions
Isaiah 46:9-10 ESV says,
“Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’”
God often called the Israelites’ attention back to Himself by appealing to their memory of the former things He had done in their lives. Their journey from being slaves in the land of Egypt to conquering the promised land would not have been possible without God’s miracles and provisions. Isaiah 46:9-10 serves as a powerful reminder of the nature of God’s understanding and His ability to guide us through every aspect of our lives. God is not bound by time or limited by human understanding.
Remembering God’s Protection: An Example From My Life
I remember when He protected me. I was in high school, going to pick up my younger cousin from the day care center. I was held up at gun point in broad daylight. Neither I nor my friends were harmed. Very shaken though. I’m sure that all of you can remember God protecting you, healing you, providing for you in some way. Remembering the goodness God has done in the past is essential for every Christian.
Going Deeper…
What miracles has God done in your life recently? Do you remember His presence in a dark time of your life? Think back to how He has provided for you. Never forget what He has done and trust Him to do even more.
