We live in a world where many people have their own view on life. That is, how we got here and where is this all leading to? It is basically called one’s worldview, which I briefly covered in my blog post, “There is No Creator God? Really?”. In this blog post, “In the Beginning God”, however, I want to present for your consideration, in a very simplistic and plain-speaking manner, well established and commonly accepted facts, from a “scientific” perspective, without getting bogged down in a lot of philosophical minutiae. In other words, we want to put aside for the moment the so called super “intelligence” that defies and flies in the face of basic common sense. We want to look at this from a logical, reasonable, and rational thought process.
It appears regarding the matter of belief in the creator God, it is not a head or mind issue at all, but a heart issue. That is, some people just simply do not want to believe. The consequences should be very alarming to those who think it is no big deal what we believe about the origin of life. But based on my observations, in listening to and reading comments, it appears of little to no concern to many.
As stated in my previous blog post referenced above, one must totally discount or disbelieve in the creator God to not believe the Bible. So, let’s use our brains and examine in brief, the origin of life from what we know to be true in a simple, reasonable, and rational manner.
In the Beginning…The “Big Bang?”
Keep in mind that the “Big Bang” is a Theory, which by definition is NOT a proven fact, yet it is being presented as “the leading explanation of how life began.” (space.com)
The “Big Bang Theory” is the belief that the universe and all it contains is the result of matter, so dense that the matter was invisible, then suddenly a mega explosion occurred, giving us this extremely complex and intricate life we see around us.
Now THINK about that rationally for just a few minutes. I mean really think about that rationally. And at the same time, think about how complicated and ultra sophisticated life is, particularly the human body.
But for now, let’s just examine the physical aspects of the universe as we know it.
Many scientists believe that this “Big Bang” explosion occurred between 8 and 20 billion years ago. That is an enormous gap in time, which they must have in order to try and “explain” evolution.
And Then There Were Assumptions
To accept the Big Bang, one must assume the existence of matter and energy to be eternal. Matter had to be eternally present before the Big Bang or there would have been nothing there to go BOOM! We expose here then that everyone on earth believes in something eternal by faith. It is either faith in eternal matter and energy OR faith in eternal God.
Why is this belief by faith? Because it is beyond the reach of science to test. There are no experiments that can test who or what was here when the universe began.
Consequently, when we speak of origins, neither the creation model nor the evolution model can be verified by reproducible scientific experiments. (The Evolution of a Creationist, Jobe Martin, 1994.) This takes both out of the realm of “science” and into the arena of faith. But scientists will not call it what it is, that is, faith. (By definition, science means knowledge).
There is no true scientific evidence that is not based on assumptions. Scientists do not know. They can only theorize. And the danger with this is that countless millions will be led to potential eternal separation from the creator God if they believe in this unprovable theory.
In the Beginning: Eternal Matter and Energy or Eternal God?
God in His infinite genius has designed His creation such that, no matter which view of the origin you believe, you come face to face with Him. Why? Because if matter and energy were eternal, they would be, by the time of the “Big Bang”, in a state of equilibrium. That means everything would be equal and nonreactive.
For example, it would be like a car that sits in park and doesn’t do anything until it is started up. Starting the engine “explodes” the gasoline which gives power to move the car.
Science tells us that when matter is somewhere for a long enough time (eternity past), it will eventually stop doing anything and just sit there in neutral so to speak, like a car. (This is a part of the second law of thermodynamics.) So, before the “Big Bang” all matter and energy, if eternal, would be in neutral, like a car when it’s turned off in park. It will not move until someone starts it up.
If everything was in neutral before the “Big Bang”, what would make the “Big Bang” go BOOM?
Everyone Believes Something by Faith
If you believe in the “Big Bang” and eternal matter and energy, you believe by faith that an “outside force” acted on this matter-in-neutral to supply the energy necessary to explode it into action. In reality, you are face to face with God. “In the beginning, God!” The question becomes either, “Do I believe by faith in eternal matter and energy? (This presents the problem of HOW did the “Big Bang” go BOOM?) Either that, or “Do I believe by faith in eternal God?” Everyone believes by faith in something eternal!
Many people probably never think of it this way, that is, their belief in the eternal aspect of matter and energy, but that is what it really comes down to.
The obvious ultimate question then is: Where did the matter and energy come from? We know that if you leave matter and energy to itself, it does not organize itself.
Evolutionists take many necessary steps for granted in the molecules-to-man model. In other words, they assume that non-living chemicals gave rise to that first living cell, which in turn, evolved into ever and ever more complex forms of life. To creationist’s claim that “nothing comes from nothing,” atheist reply that we claim God comes from nothing. That is not true. The Bible does not claim that God came from nothing. The Word of God declares that God always existed, that He is an eternally existing being, without beginning or end.
Now I know very well that the mere thought of that is far beyond the ability of anyone to comprehend. We simply do not have the mental capacity to get even remotely anywhere close to understanding that. God does not expect or require us to understand. As has already been stated, it is a matter of faith. God puts it this way in the book of Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, ….”
The Anthropic Principle!
For our lives to be maintained, we must have exactly the correct amounts of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, sunlight, magnetic field, speed of rotation and revolution of earth, distance from the moon, sun, ozone, water, gravity, etc., etc., etc.
All these factors must be in the correct amounts, in the right places, at the right times, and in exact relationships with each other.
For instance, if our earth’s gravity was weaker, our atmosphere would thin out and be unable to support life. If gravity was stronger, undesirable gases such an ammonia gas would be held in higher concentrations and be detrimental to life.
That means our earth must have been made exactly the right size to generate the perfect amount of gravity to support our atmosphere. But it also had to be the right size to hold our moon in orbit. That means the moon had to be made the right size so it wouldn’t drift off into space or crash into earth.
Further, it had to be the right size so that the ocean tides stay under control. Many other arguments could be made, but the fact is, the evolution position has so many flaws it would be almost laughable if its consequences were not so sad.
The anthropic principle states that the overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates that the precise design and finely balanced fundamental forces governing our Universe argue persuasively that our Universe was designed by a supernatural intelligence, namely God. Either that, or there is an infinity of Universes that don’t support life and we “just happen” to exist in the only one that does. (Creation: Remarkable Evidence of God’s Design, copyright 2003 Grant Jeffrey)
The odds of that would be astronomical!
Astronomer George Greenstein wrote, in his 1988 book The Symbiotic Universe, that new scientific discoveries were providing compelling evidence that our Universe could not possibly have come into existence by chance alone.
Which position sounds the much more rational and reasonable to have occurred?
An Innumerable Amount of Evidence
There is an innumerable amount of further incontrovertible facts regarding the universe that we could present, but that would be well beyond the limits of this single blog post. Suffice it to say, based on the above presented indisputable scientific evidence, it is the unwavering position of this author that the creator God of the Bible is the only reasonable, logical, and rational explanation for the existence of all we see and experience around us.
The Bible Spoke First
The Bible is never subjected to science, but science is always subjected to the Bible.
Why?
Because the Bible was written thousands of years before any scientific “discoveries” were made, and as time goes on there are more and more archaeological findings and other sciences that confirm what was already stated in scriptures long ago. So clearly, the Bible supersedes and is far more advanced in the knowledge of the Universe, as well as life here on earth than all the sciences combined (because God divinely inspired the writings of the Bible. He is infinite in knowledge, whereas we are finite in ours).
The Bible, although written thousands of years ago, contains numerous scientifically accurate statements that are impossible to explain apart from the Scriptures. The Bible is not a scientific textbook, but whenever the Scriptures do include statements about scientific matters, these statements written thousands of years in advance, are stunningly accurate. Biblical statements reveal knowledge of science that was thousands of years ahead of what was known to the world when they were written.
How could the writers of the Scriptures possibly have known these scientific facts?
The book of Genesis begins with the words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
Until 1950, most scientists believed in some variation of the “steady state” theory, which suggested that the Universe had always existed as we observe it today. This theory totally contradicted the Word of God, which, as recorded, affirmed that God created the entire Universe at a definite point in time in the distant past.
New discoveries in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics since the 1930s have forced most of the scientific world to change, believing the evidence now points to the definite beginning or creation of the Universe from one point or singularity.
Dr. P. Dirac, a Nobel Prize-winner from Cambridge University, wrote: “It seems certain that there was a definite time of creation.”
The overwhelming new evidence supports the biblical position that the Universe was definitely created at some point in time. (A Vilenkin, Creation of Universes from Nothing, Physics Letters, 1982)
Dr. Vera Kistiakowsky, a physicist from MIT, wrote, “The exquisite order displayed by our scientific understanding of the physical world calls for the divine.” (Cosmos, Bios, Theos: Scientists Reflect on Science, God and the Origins of the Universe Life, and Homo Sapiens) (La Salle, IL, Open Court Pub. Co., 1992)
The evidence from nature and the extraordinary scientific discoveries of the atom and DNA, reveal meticulous intelligent design. If there is clear evidence of design, which there is, then obviously there had to be a designer. Everything we see around us, from the clothes we wear, to the homes we live in, to the vehicles we drive, had to be designed and made by someone. It does not get any simpler than that.
In the Beginning God: Conclusion
What you choose to believe is eternally important.
Based on this overwhelming evidence, and we have just touched on a very small portion of the available information, it seems any reasonable, rational thinking person would conclude that the life we see around us had to be created by a far superior supernatural intelligence (and not aliens from another planet).
The Bible tells us that everyone knows the creator God exist, but many choose to suppress or hold down that knowledge.
BUT DO NOT LET THAT BE YOU!
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. – Romans 1:18-20
