“God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.”
What does it mean when we say, “God is a shield”? He is a shield to everyone that trusts in Him. The above verse doesn’t say that God will provide a shield. It says that He, Himself is a shield. Think about it this way, for someone or something to get to us, it or they would have to go through Jesus! Our protection comes from God. In times of physical and spiritual attack and in threatening situations of all kinds, those who trust in the Lord find Him to be a strong Protector.
Let’s read Genesis 15:1. In this account the Lord made a covenant promise to Abram. The chapter begins with the Lord speaking to Abram in a vision and saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great” (NLT). Apparently, Abram (before his name was changed to Abraham) was in fear, for the Lord to say, “Do not be afraid”.
Although Abraham is known for his great faith, he, like all of us, was flawed with human weaknesses. In Genesis chapter 14 he had just come out of leading a fierce battle to rescue his nephew Lot and he had interactions with some powerful kings at that time as well. So understandably he could have been a little unnerved. The Lord was reassuring him, promising to protect Abram and bless him even more than he already was. He wanted him to know that He was his source and that His promises were true and they would come to pass. Is God reminding you today that He is your source? What is the Holy Spirit leading you to do?
Have you ever taken a great step of faith, and your mind begins to think, “What have you done?” Let me tell you, the Lord is always there to reassure us if we but listen. Letting us know that He is our shield just like He promised Abram.
I remember back in 2022 I took a huge step of faith and the enemy tried to tell me that I made the wrong decision. That I should have waited another 6 months. How was I going to survive? But the Lord reminded me just like He did Abram. He said trust me, do you not believe that I am able to do exceedingly above all that you can ask, think, imagine and, even above that? (Ephesians 3:20) I am your protector! He promised to be my exceeding great reward and He has been even till this day.
Do you know that if we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, we get all He has to offer, if we receive it? The Bible gives us the promises of God, where we are reminded that He is our shield and our protector. Verses like Psalm 28:7 ESV, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts, and I am helped;”. Psalm 3:3 ESV declares, “But you, O Lord are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.”
If you feel as though you are missing it, ask Him to reveal to you the areas where you do not trust Him completely. He is a loving Father who wants only good for you. All of God’s ways are perfect!!! Listen to the still small voice, leading you with peace. I encourage you today, trust your protector, God, He is a Shield to ALL that trust HIM!
